The letter below is from our longtime dear friend, Arlan Foster, of Liberty County. You remember Arlan — he helped us fight Trans-Texas Corridor, ran for Texas House in 2008 and is a leader in corrections reform. Arlan’s lovely wife, Carolyn, passed on last year and is missed by Arlan and all.
Dear Friends:
I am part of a group that is forming a non-partisan, independent organization — Liberty County Independents.
We are holding our very first event — a Meet and Greet on Tuesday, April 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Dayton Community Center at 801 S. Cleveland Street in Dayton.
Independents are voters who vote for the person or the issue, not the party, and we want more competition and choices in our elections. Because we have open primaries in Texas, we are learning to use our votes in contested primaries to move an agenda that unites us, rather than divides us.
We are not trying to start a new party, just a bunch of folks looking for the best person for the job.
We have invited both candidates who are in a runoff to represent us in the Texas House — Ernest Bailes and Keith Strahan. We have also sent them a questionnaire for them to fill out by April 22 addressing protection of land and water resources, privatizing prisons and retirement systems and election reform. We have also invited other local candidates involved in the runoff and any person up for election in 2016 present at our meeting will be recognized and afforded an opportunity to speak.
For more information, please visit the news section of Independent Texans at IndyTexans.org or call us at 512-535-0989. Or, just show up on the 26th and bring a neighbor!
Arlan Foster
